Guitar & Banjo Lessons
I started taking lessons here because I wanted to pick up a new hobby and continue learning music even after school. My instructor Phil was super knowledgeable and very patient with me every lesson I had. If you’re looking for a great guitar/banjo instructor, definitely ask for Phil! The staff at Philly Music Lessons are very responsive and accommodating when scheduling lessons. They really strive to make this a great place to learn and love your instrument!
I started my flute lesson with Ms. Emily Stewart at PML in February 2020. I had a chance to have about a month of in-person lessons before we switched to Skype due to the pandemic. I am very happy with the quality of the lessons and the quick response of the PML team to my inquiries. Highly recommended, even for adults who are looking to pick up a new instrument!
I am an adult learner, studying the violin for about 4 years with Stef Emery. Stef is a patient and encouraging teacher, full of enthusiasm for your progress. She understands the challenges for an adult learner, and is full of advice as to how to get the most out of your available practice time, as well as practical solutions for progressing with a piece. The PML operation is efficient, flexible and accommodating, and the transition to online learning through the last year was surprisingly effective.
I took weekly voice lessons here for about a year. Great facility and instructors, easy online portal for scheduling and tracking. Highly recommended!
As someone who used to play music regularly when I was younger, Philly Music Lessons has been a great way for me to get back to playing the guitar and reconnect with the music I love. Great teachers and flexible schedules and a convenient location.
Amazing experience with an amazing instructor! I have zero musical background and decided I wanted to take up a new hobby and take drum lessons! Tom Cullen is THE MAN! He is incredibly helpful and easy to understand, patient, and fun to learn from. The studio itself is very welcoming and comfortable as well. I highly highly suggest Philly Music Lessons and especially Tom Cullen as a top tier instructor and studio for all your needs!
My daughter started piano lessons when she was 3 years old and Teacher Rick was extremely patient with her even with her short attention span. Even during this difficult time with the pandemic, Philly Music Lessons took all the cautions seriously and quickly turned around to virtual lessons which we had no problem with and the transition was great. I would highly recommend to parents who would like to start music lessons for their kids!
Like so many people, I played music in middle school band for all of 3 years and then gave up on music for various reasons. Fast forward many, many moons and about 17 years, and now I'm an adult with a bass guitar, an itch to play, but no real knowledge of music theory and a rudimentary understanding of the bass. I remembered walking past Philly Music Lessons and thought I'd give it a try. After 6 months of lessons with Collin, I can say I'm so glad I decided to sign up for lessons! Collin to so patient and helpful and has a wealth of knowledge. He does a great job of breaking down information into bite size pieces and really works with you to make your lessons meaningful to your individual goals and musical taste. I'd recommend Philly Music Lessons to anyone interested in pursuing a musical journey.
My saxophone teacher has been one of the best experiences I've ever had with learning. Very patient but also very instructive and inspirational. Very knowledgeable about both the little things and the larger view. Always has great exercises for me to work on and feel myself grow as a musician. Philly Music Lessons has also been very helpful in any way possible in setting up my lessons with David. Thanks to everybody for this experience, its very much recommended.
My daughter took in-home cello lessons with Yeliza for three months. She enjoyed the cello, but more importantly, she enjoyed the lessons with her instructor. Yeliza was very patient with my daughter who had never played the cello before, she also made sure to explain and teach my daughter in a way that she could understand as a beginner, while giving her the proper terminology. Yeliza recorded videos at the end of each lesson so that my daughter had a reference for practice, and she made herself available by text if my daughter had questions. The entire process of getting the rental cello and getting lessons started was seamless. All in all, it was a great experience for my daughter!
Joe is a fantastic guitar teacher. My son and husband both take lessons from him, and we see him at our house every week. No matter what, he is always cheerful and kind. He is one of my favorite people in Philadelphia. He single handedly eased our transition to Philly from Seattle and we are so grateful. He is a true gem, not only as a teacher and musician, but as a person. He is flexible, creative, hard-working--an all around standout.
There's so much I can say about Philly music lessons but I'll just sum it up too "they are the best''. My daughter started violin lessons in October of 2016 and lovesss it. She had the privilege of being taught by not just one instructor but two! Eunice & then Freddy, and they are just incredible. . . Patient & kind but also Stern when they need to be. You want to introduce your child to music, this is the place to go . . . I recommend them to all my friends & family .
Drums & Piano Lessons
Joey and Alex at Philly Music Lessons are terrific! My boys have been taking piano and drums with Alex for almost a year now and I am amazed at their progress. Alex is a great teacher, he is very patient with my boys, especially my 6 year old. He is a very skilled musician and really knows how to teach children. When I was a kid lessons were grueling but Alex has an upbeat energy that makes every lesson fun and exciting. The studio is warm and inviting and has a great vibe. Music is such an important part of my life, it is so great to see my kids enjoy it as well! I feel so fortunate to have this place in my neighborhood! Check them out, you definitely won't be sorry. Philly Music Lessons totally ROCKS!
I've been taking cello lessons with Nellie at Philly Music Lessons for most of the year. I'm an adult student and simply learning to play for my own amusement and relaxation. Nellie is an amazing teacher and a lovely, bright person overall. Whenever I'm stuck she can't wait to find a new way to help me and if I'm feeling discouraged she keeps me positive. She's a great instructor whether you're a serious musician or just want personal enrichment like myself. The office is also very professional , friendly and prompt.
My teacher was an incredible musician and a great teacher. They cater the lessons to fit your needs and take you in a direction that you want to go. On the business side, they respond to emails promptly, really understanding, and will help you in any way possible. Great place.
Loved taking lessons here. Both my instructors were extremely talented and incredibly helpful teachers. The office was always very accommodating of the plentiful schedule changes and cancellations I had during my two years taking lessons. Would highly recommend.
Philly Music Lessons is great! I received a few guitar lessons as a birthday gift from my girlfriend and ended up taking more when those ran out. The office was super helpful in setting the lessons up. They asked me to describe the type of music I was into and what I wanted to learn and set me up with my instructor Collin. Collin is incredibly talented and taught me quite a bit about the guitar. If you are thinking about taking lessons, do yourself a favor and book them at Philly Music Lessons.
My daughter's guitar teacher is great and the office staff is easy to reach and very accommodating.
Overall, great experience with Philly Music Lessons. I had my lessons at the South Philly studio, which was very convenient for me since I lived only 5 mins away. All lessons are coordinated electronically, and it was for the most part easy to communicate via email. My ukulele teacher , Sean was also very attentive and explained things in depth and well.
Great teachers with easy going personalities. They are very encouraging and knowledgeable. I had a fantastic experience and will continue to go there.
I'm a graduate student in the area and I have been taking lessons for the past month now. I look forward to cello lessons every week. My instructor is very patient with me and helps me learn new techniques to become a better player. The cello I am renting is in excellent condition. It came with a bow, rosin, and a muffler. Would definitely recommend trying this place out.
My 9 year old daughter loves it here! She has an excellent teacher named Rachel who is such a sweet person to be around! They are affordable, very accommodating and understanding of different situations. I would definitely recommend this school for lessons. They are awesome!
My son James, has been practicing piano for a little over 6 months. His piano instructor is Collin. Collin is very personable, relaxed, always giving James positive feedback with every lesson. We had the pleasure to experience his first spring recital this past May. It was AWESOME! Our experience with Philly Music Lessons has been excellent.
My daughter is taking weekly lessons with Philly Music Lessons and she absolutely loves it. Her instrument of choice is the ukulele and I really thought I was going to have a hard time finding someone to teach her this instrument. Her instructor, Collin, is very knowledgeable and patient. The ease to sign up for classes and pay was perfect. Emailed questions are answered very quickly, the facility itself is fun and clean. I would recommend Philly Music Lessons to anyone!
Nellie Smith is an incredible teacher. I am an older adult who has had 2 musical kids, so I have attended many music lessons with the best teachers in our geographical area, and she is outstanding. She is deeply caring, thoughtful, nurturing and up to date on her musical information as well as her teaching skills making studying with her a joy and she is a versatile, talented musician. I am so honored to have had the opportunity to become her student. The school's policies are also student friendly.
We have had a wonderful experience with Philly Music Lessons in South Philadelphia. They were able to pair our daughter who is experienced in multiple instruments with an advanced instructor who was able to challenge and engage her. The pleasantness and professionalism of the administrative staff is not like any I have experienced. They efficiently handle any issues that arise. The versatility of their teaching staff is impressive. I have and will continue to recommend Philly Music Lessons.
My experience signing up for and taking singing lessons at Philly Music Lessons was great all around. The school paired me up with a teacher promptly based on my needs, and it was easy to correspond with the school regarding scheduling, billing, etc. My lessons with Marcelle were also great. As an adult who has never taken singing lessons before, Marcelle made me feel comfortable, our lessons were always engaging and informative, and I made noticeable progress in the four months together.
I have been greatly enjoying my singing lessons! We had to switch to online lessons, but it was an easy transition to make and it is working out better than expected. Melanie is a fantastic voice instructor and I feel like I've gotten a lot out of the experience.
I love Philly Music Lessons! I am based in Los Angeles and I meet once a week virtually with my piano teacher, who is awesome. I have noticed a huge improvement in my skill during a very short period of time. Perfect for these stay-at-home times.
I decided to take cello lessons this past Fall as a way to find discipline and to work my brain - I was also looking for a positive distraction during the pandemic, and learning cello had been a childhood dream of mine! The process of getting set up with lessons was super pleasant. My teacher, Ellen, is awesome! Online lessons have actually been a blessing for now, as I’m a mom and have so little time! Easy to pop onto my lesson and off. I think it’s part of why I’ve been able to really stick with lessons this time around. Our lessons are very efficient!
We have worked with Philly Music Lessons for the last 2-3 years. Our 11-year-old son has worked with Emily Stewart, who has been a great piano teacher for him. We've also had great communication with Philly Music Lessons and their support staff. I would trust any of their handpicked teachers!
When I moved to Philadelphia several months ago, I knew I wanted to start taking piano lessons. I did some research, found Philly Music Lessons and was immediately connected with an excellent teacher who worked with adult students like me. When I heard this past week that I would have the option to have my next lesson conducted online I jumped at the chance. Why not? It seemed like a good idea to cut down on foot traffic in the Fishtown studio space. I was already looking forward to yesterday’s online class, but I want to say that it exceeded my expectations. I received the same attentive teaching that I have always gotten in person.I love being able to continue taking lessons, and I look forward to my next one. I want other students to know that it is absolutely possible to continue getting excellent music instruction while staying safe. I believe that music students will enjoy keeping lessons as a regular part of their lives right now. Being able to do something as normal as taking a piano lesson is actually quite soothing and reassuring in a stressful time.

Covid-19 can’t stop Joyce from ukulele practice. @phillymusiclessons is offering virtual lessons and Joyce was thrilled to still be able to see her teacher Collin this week!
Joe has been teaching our teenage son guitar for over two years. In addition to being an accomplished musician and personable individual, Joe is able to communicate and instruct regardless of the skill level of the student. Our son enjoys the weekly lessons and continues to improve. We benefit from Joe being able to teach at our house as well as his flexibility when other activities conflict with lessons… we’re extremely pleased!

Vince focuses on both technique and music appreciation. He gives equal weight to my learning how to play the guitar and my learning to love the instrument. He plans our lessons based on my musical interests and, in doing so, consistently finds inventive ways to work on problem areas.
Joe is an excellent music teacher. He is very clear, attentive, and creative and makes the lessons and instruction feel fun and rewarding. My son is very excited about playing music.
