Jazz, Classical, Pop, Contemporary, Rock

I am a Philadelphia-based drummer who moved from Arizona
in 2018 to attend The University of the Arts for drum performance (class
of 2022). I have performed/recorded in and around the Philadelphia area
with numerous musical groups, playing many different styles of music
including rock, jazz, funk, big band, and much more. As a teacher, my
instructional methodology is holistically oriented to fit the needs of each
individual student, with a focus on exploring and nurturing their personal
interests in music, positive reinforcement and developing a healthy
growth mindset conducive to efficient learning.

When did you begin playing drums, and why?

I started playing drums when I was 10 years old after dropping piano and guitar because they did not pique my interest nearly as much as the drumset that sat on the other side of my teachers studio. While the playing certainly did not come naturally to me at first it became my number one outlet for expression, community, joy, and freedom by the time I was half-way through high school. Playing the drums and being involved in music has continued to be the primary source for everything that gives my life meaning!

What other instruments do you play, and what is your experience with them?

Although I do not actively play other instruments on a professional level I have spent time learning piano, bass, and guitar throughout my high school and college education and can say without a doubt that learning another instrument in tandem with your primary instrument is extremely beneficial in strengthening your overall connection to music and widening your perception when playing with others.

What are your personal goals as a musician?

I am generally not driven by specific career goals but constantly try to surround myself with creative people/musicians who I love that push me to be a better musician and human being! When it comes to my instrument I just want to keep achieving more creative freedom behind the drums and be able to always make the music feel good.

Do you have a memory of a time when a musical concept or technique really clicked?  Something you’ll remember forever?

There was one day in my sophomore year of college that I had a lesson before a big band rehearsal and Steve Fidyk, my teacher at the time, had just been telling me about utilizing rudiments in a big band setting. At one point during the rehearsal I used a simple 5-stroke roll on the snare drum as a figure setup and it worked out perfectly. I remember my face lighting up and immediately I locked eyes with Steve as we both smiled, acknowledging what had just happened. It made me realize how impactful and musical even the most basic rudiments and ideas can be when used effectively, and to have been able to apply this thing that at the time was new to me in a musical setting just felt amazing!

What is your favorite piece of advice from one of your past (or current) teachers?

“RELAX!”

What was your most challenging moment learning an instrument?

Off the top of my head, one challenging experience was taking Jazz Piano in college and having to demonstrate new skills in front of the professor and class every week. Every note was a challenge when it was on an instrument that I did not feel comfortable playing in front of my peers!

What is your biggest musical achievement?

Winning my elementary school talent show. I played terribly, and they absolutely loved it!

Favorite thing about teaching?

My favorite thing about teaching is when I can see that the student is stepping up and embracing the challenges of learning an instrument – and having fun while doing it!

What is a piece of advice you would like to share with anyone learning music?

Be consistent, be patient, and never stop being a student!

Personal music projects:

I currently play drums with The Chronicles (debut album release TBA!) and Spirit Furnace (find us wherever you stream your music!). I also recorded drums on Lily McKown’s 2020 debut record “Backseat Driver” and her 2023 single release “Yarko’s House”.
