Our Fishtown Community, Our Story!

Morning Music ClassesFishtown Community Building Through Music
A few years ago, we moved our music lessons business out of our basement and into a beautiful space down the street in Fishtown. Feeling inspired by my own upbringing next to a fine arts and music institute for kids and adults, I decided to start teaching music classes to the smallest of our neighbors! I wanted to bring the experience of walking past an open window to the sounds of clarinets, opera singing, piano practice, and plays into my Fishtown community. Cracking open the windows on a warm June day, the sounds our first music classes and lessons were heard in Fishtown in 2014.

Bringing high quality music was a focus of mine. I had been to some great music classes throughout the city in my nannying days, and I realized how deeply kids responded to the ones with genuinely good music and real instruments. With this in mind, I created a flexible routine that engages kids through props, promotes spontaneous interaction between teacher and child, and trains the ears to hear pitches using Solfege, familiar songs, and other music-based exercises. At the center of my classes are our carefully selected teachers, often performers in Philly and teachers with a talent for connecting with kids. They play their guitar (and sometimes ukulele!), while performing and guiding children through various kids songs, rhymes, and our unique “Hello” and “Goodbye” songs.

Each week, old standards and new children’s songs are presented. With a scarves, pinwheels, parachutes, puppets, shakers, various world instruments, a big piano, and more, we explore what it means to play music. Interactive pieces shift from the most basic of kind to more complex dances and movement games as youngsters progress through the months. Heavily based on individual groups, these classes are adaptable – a good fit for many different ages.

Parents, sit back and enjoy as you play with your baby through this guided 45 minutes of fun! You can read our march newsletter below. Stroller parking is available.

South Philly Baby & Tots Music Classes, Ages 0-3

South Philly ClassHello South Philly! We’ve been having a good time over here in Passyunk Square, bringing our cheery little music classes to this side of town. We’ve met lots of new faces at our 9 AM Wednesday class. We even had a special guest accompany me on piano last week! Co-owner of our South Philly space, Stephen Longenecker, played some impromptu piano while I sang my tunes and strummed guitar (you can tell this guy has spent quite a bit of time entertaining his own little ones with childhood classics, as he gave the “Ba Ba Black Sheep” melody a highly entertaining blues twist).

These classes are new to this part of Philly (est. in Fishtown in 2014), so be sure to get your first class in for FREE and try it out. Through the remaining months of the 2017 year, classes will continue to be held on Wednesdays at 9 AM (except for the week of Thanksgiving, and ending the week before Christmas). You can drop-in to any scheduled class for $12 – classes are $10 each when you sign up for the month or get a season package. Our 2018 Philly Music Babies schedule will be announced soon, so you can look towards 2018 for more music at 13th and Tasker.

Want to learn more about our school? Feel free to visit us in Rittenhouse Square in December for Philly Music Lessons’s 2017 Fall Recital. You can check out footage of students from all over Philadelphia and the Main Line playing in our highlights reel to get a taste of what you might see this season. You can also see some of our teachers performing here (we’re just beginning to grow their virtual portfolio – its worth watching!).

What is Open Music? | Kids Music Classes

Open Music
Philly Music Babies opened its shaker-clad circle to the Fishtown neighborhood a little over three years ago. With a lineup of songs, scarves, pinwheels, guitar, rhythm sticks, wrist bells, drums, and a whole bunch of assorted instruments, we welcomed neighborhood families to come sing with us on a weekly basis. The idea behind the classes was to provide quality music exposure.

Why exposure? There are many studies that point to the language and cognitive benefits that infants and young children receive from early musical education. Not only that, with regards to a child’s capacity to learn music, exposure itself (especially music in the home), leads to a greater music aptitude throughout the rest of a child’s life. Though music may not be important for everyone, there is certainly something to be said for the positive ways in which music shapes a developing child’s mind. And with all of the life-skills that learning and playing an instrument can give us (not to mention the artistic and emotional satisfaction), we are even more motivated to share music with our community of little ones in Fishtown and South Philly.

Philly Music Babies focuses on repetition through traditional songs and incorporates the Kodaly Method. Teacher-lead music and games, backed by guitar, form the core of our class. We introduce solfege (Do, Re, Mi …) to develop a music language of pitch and syllables. By these means, we work toward nurturing a sense of rhythm, melody, and harmony. But really, what we are aiming at is just creating music that simply sounds and feels good! It is our experience that music is enough of a reason to come out and sing. Whether your baby is venturing out around other kids for the first time, or your youngest just needs some mommy-and-me time, the process of making music together is invigorating for everyone (and tuckers them out just in time for naps)!

So then, what is Open Music? Open Music was inspired by the first set of graduates from our Philly Music Babies series. Now 3 and 4 (and almost 5!) and looking for some continuation of weekly music, parents often ask, what’s next? Do you have any more? When can I start private lessons (more on that here)?

In my own experience, few kids are ready for lessons at 4. While certain kids might do well in the one-on-one lesson, most are still itching for exploration and free-play. Open music is designed with creative group work portions as well as crucial segments of child-led, free-play. Children are given the space and time to feel out musical concepts at their own paces, and are introduced to new ideas through group play. Combining a multitude of senses, learning props, tinker-projects, art, imaginative story time, and real instrument jam sessions, children experience music through play.

Pay What You Can Music Classes for Baby and Momma

babymusicWe’re switching to a drop-in only system for our baby and tots music classes. This means you no longer have to sign up for our weekly music gatherings. Simply show up, and pay what you can (suggested donation of $10/class)! We’ll be capping the classes at 10-12ish kids (depending how much of a wild rumpus can be contained on the big blue rug).

We do encourage weekly participation, as group flow becomes quite nice over time. Additionally, we love when babies grow up with us! And it often takes kiddos at least a few goes at the whole “class” thing before they warm to it. So please, try class when in doubt (whether you’re unsure of readiness due to age, or simply because you’re hesitant to take your unruly toddler to a class setting). We bend the classes to the group and adjust songs and activities based on the ages, day, or “mood” of the room. Yes, your curious little one may break the rules and get out a xylophone during shaker time, and we welcome these curious little minds and busy bodies.

Please, be sure to stay tuned into our calendar, facebook, twitter, and instagram for updates and last minute schedule changes.

Beautiful Tone, Beautiful Heart!

Suzuki-Style Violin Class for Ages 3-5

“Teaching music is not my main purpose. I want to make good citizens. If children hear fine music from the day of their birth and learn to play it, they develop sensitivity, discipline and endurance. They get a beautiful heart.”

Shin’ichi Suzuki

Saturdays at 11 AM at Philly Music Lessons
October 1st – November 19th
$198 for 8 classes
(Includes a 3 month violin rental fitted for your child’s size at the first class)

Though many different curiosities are piqued when children come into our space and see instruments on the walls and in our practice rooms, violin seems to be of particular interest over and over again! Thus we’ve decided to offer a Suzuki-style violin class for kids ages 3-5. With a violin rental embedded into the cost, kids have the opportunity to experience the Suzuki method and other violin group work intended to introduce young bodies and minds to the violin. Read more about our kids violin class here!

Music Exploration Ages 3-5

Tuesdays at 4PM
October 4th – November 22nd
$128 for 8 classes

Our music exploration class is an intro to music beyond baby and toddler classes. Kids will explore ukuleles, their voices, piano techniques, and percussion patterns to gain experience with string instruments, solfege (ear training), and rhythm training. This class lays the groundwork for private lessons in a variety ofinstruments and is simply a fun way to explore music! Each class concludes with an art project that will reinforce a new concept each week.

You can buy a package in person, at class (cash, check, or credit card), or we can email you an invoice so you can pay in advance online. Please note: there are a limited number of packages issued per class, as we like to keep class sizes relatively small. Packages can be issued for either Wednesdays, Saturdays, or Sundays.

Expiration Dates for Packages/Punch Cards
5 class packages/punch cards expire within a time frame that allows you to miss roughly two scheduled classes on our calendar. For example, Saturday classes are usually scheduled 2-3 times per month. Thanks!

Life at Philly Music Lessons Post-Baby and Toddler Music?

Some of you have been with us for almost 2 years now! Its amazing how time has flown, how much everyone has grown, and how much we’ve all come to love our classes together. Please stay in touch with us through our school’s main newsletter, where we announce new classes for ages 3 and up. Here you’ll also find out more about private lessons, recitals, and other events going on at the studio. For instance, this Spring we’ve been holding classes where baby and tots alumni have gotten the chance to reconvene with old friends in a musical way – Keep an eye out for new Fall class offerings!

Suzuki Style Group Violin Class Ages 3 & 4
Feel free to get in touch with us now if you’d be interested in a group Suzuki-style violin class for ages 3-4 starting September 2016. Small-sized violin rentals will be included.

Private Lessons
We encourage holding off on private lessons until at least 4, but we also know every kid is different! If you’re thinking music lessons, you may consider setting up a trial run (suggested for no more the 30 minutes for young kids), so you can see how your child would do with music lessons at any age.

2016 Baby and Tots Music Classes

baby music winterNew Class Time Starting February 2016!

We’ll continue our weekly Wednesday gatherings at 10 AM. Please get in touch if you plan to attend as a regular that day. It helps us to keep loose track of numbers so we can maintain intimate classes. Currently, Wednesdays are almost full! But the good news is (especially for those still taking multiple naps), we have a new baby music time starting in February at noon on Thursdays. Join us in Fishtown for some weekly music, ages 0-3 years.

If you haven’t yet stopped by for a class, you can give it a whirl for free your first time. Come, test the waters and make sure its a good fit! These are casual, weekly music classes, where babies as little as 4 months sit in mom’s, dad’s, or caregiver’s, lap while Coco leads the classes on guitar and vocals. For the toddlers, circle games, props, and a variety of musical instruments offer engaging musical exploration. Traditional kids songs become recognizable to weekly kids, allowing them to learn and eventually sing along with our tunes. They also gain a wealth of neighborhood friends! Over the months, new songs are introduced slowly to expand their growing musical ears. Our classes tend to be small, anywhere from 5-10 kids. To keep it this way, we ask that you try to RSVP by emailing coco (especially for our scheduled Saturday music classes), as weekends can get busy in the winter.

Oh, hey! Did you just have a baby and live in Philly?

If you have a newborn in Fishtown or surrounding areas in Philly, you might be interested in this Spring 2016 music class (baby should be between 0 and 5 months come the Spring):

After the cold winter months, we’ll be kicking off a new group baby music class for Philly parents. This is a unique, 8 week program (8 weekly classes), where you can come learn ukulele in the mornings with your little one. Taught by one of our instructors, Donnie Felton, (dad of two and clarinet, piano, guitar, and ukulele extraordinaire), these group ukulele lessons will be geared towards moms and dads with new babies. Parents are encouraged to bring their little ones along to classes (fussy babies, nursing moms, and anyone else who gets the whole newborn thing are warmly welcomed!). Classes will feature teacher performance and foundation level instruction on ukulele for moms and dads. All of this will revolve around learning traditional kids songs and lullabies that you can play with and for your child as they grow. What you will learn will enable you to learn other songs on the ukulele too.

Coming this Spring! Ukulele rentals included. Please get in touch if you’d like to take the whole music thing a bit further and learn some songs yourself!
