Season Packages for Fall

lesson packagesFall is around the corner! With school starting up any day now (if not already), consider weaving some music lessons into that crisp, Autumn, productive, pumpkin schedule of yours. Season Packages are the best option for those looking to stay on top of their lessons in the coming months. By paying for your Fall in a chunk (a season package is 10 lessons), you’ll receive 10% off. This applies to both in-home (Philadelphia and the Main Line, see in-home areas here) and studio lessons (Fishtown and South Philly).

Our mantra, when things get in full-swing here, is “music as meditation”, and we hope you can find refuge in your practice when the school year kicks into full gear. One study showed that practicing piano daily had a positive impact on executive function, inhibitory control, divided attention, and mood state of its participants. Sounds like the perfect combination to make for an enjoyable and focused Fall!

Pay What You Can Music Classes for Baby and Momma

babymusicWe’re switching to a drop-in only system for our baby and tots music classes. This means you no longer have to sign up for our weekly music gatherings. Simply show up, and pay what you can (suggested donation of $10/class)! We’ll be capping the classes at 10-12ish kids (depending how much of a wild rumpus can be contained on the big blue rug).

We do encourage weekly participation, as group flow becomes quite nice over time. Additionally, we love when babies grow up with us! And it often takes kiddos at least a few goes at the whole “class” thing before they warm to it. So please, try class when in doubt (whether you’re unsure of readiness due to age, or simply because you’re hesitant to take your unruly toddler to a class setting). We bend the classes to the group and adjust songs and activities based on the ages, day, or “mood” of the room. Yes, your curious little one may break the rules and get out a xylophone during shaker time, and we welcome these curious little minds and busy bodies.

Please, be sure to stay tuned into our calendar, facebook, twitter, and instagram for updates and last minute schedule changes.

Violin Teachers Perform!

Check out one of our new violin teachers, Alexandr Kislitsyn, perform “Meditation”, by Jules Massenet. Impressive tone! Melts me with beauty.

Alexandr attended the Novosibirsk State Conservatory where he received his B.A. in violin performance. He then went on to get his masters in violin performance from Temple University. With international performance experience at a high level, Alexandr is a great teacher for advanced violin students pursuing a classical path.

If you’re dropping in ($15 per class) or attending for your first time (FREE), you can just show up so long as classes are not labeled “FULL” on our calendar. However, if you have the time, we always appreciate the heads up! Email us here if you’re popping in. Package holders are always welcome!

5 Class Baby Music Lover Package – $10/class for regulars
If you plan to come to music classes regularly, it might make sense to get a package. You can buy a package in person, at class (cash, check, or credit card), or we can email you an invoice so you can pay in advance online. Please note: there are a limited number of packages issued per class, as we like to keep class sizes relatively small. Packages can be issued for either Wednesdays, Saturdays, or Sundays.

Expiration Dates for Packages/Punch Cards
5 class packages/punch cards expire within a time frame that allows you to miss roughly two scheduled classes on our calendar. For example, Saturday classes are usually scheduled 2-3 times per month. Your punch card will expire 3 months from your purchase date, allowing you around 7-9 class dates to choose from. You can check our calendar to get a feel for typical class schedules.

Thanks!

See you all soon,

Life at Philly Music Lessons Post-Baby and Toddler Music?

Some of you have been with us for almost 2 years now! Its amazing how time has flown, how much everyone has grown, and how much we’ve all come to love our classes together. Please stay in touch with us through our school’s main newsletter, where we announce new classes for ages 3 and up. Here you’ll also find out more about private lessons, recitals, and other events going on at the studio. For instance, this Spring we’ve been holding classes where baby and tots alumni have gotten the chance to reconvene with old friends in a musical way – Keep an eye out for new Fall class offerings!

Suzuki Style Group Violin Class Ages 3 & 4
Feel free to get in touch with us now if you’d be interested in a group Suzuki-style violin class for ages 3-4 starting September 2016. Small-sized violin rentals will be included.

Private Lessons
We encourage holding off on private lessons until at least 4, but we also know every kid is different! If you’re thinking music lessons, you may consider setting up a trial run (suggested for no more the 30 minutes for young kids), so you can see how your child would do with music lessons at any age.

April Baby Music Dates

April baby and toddler musicMusic Mornings for Babies and Tots in Fishtown

April weekday music classes for babies and tots (ages 0-3) will be on Wednesday mornings at 10 AM. These classes are currently full, but you can be added to the waitlist if you’re looking to join us!

April Saturday dates are as follows: April 2nd, 16th, 23rd, and 30th at 10 AM. Additionally, we have a new SUNDAY MUSIC CLASS with Keely Sibilia. This class will be at 10 AM on April 10th, 17th, and 24th. Please email me if you’d like to join! Weekend classes take place about 3 times a month.

Class Drop in and Punch Card Policies:
So long as classes are not labeled “FULL” on our calendar, you’re welcome to drop in for $15. If you’d like to be a regular, you can attend classes for $10 or less with a package/punch card. If classes are full, you can always contact us to get on a waiting list.

Packages Options: Baby Music Lover (5 classes for $50), Mega Fan (12 classes for $100).

Expiration Date Policy (NEW!):
To encourage steady class sizes and regular friends and faces, we’ve created an expiration date policy. This only applies to new punch cards purchased, so any outstanding punch cards are valid as purchased.

How it works: From the time you purchase a punch card, your card will be dated +2 classes out from your 5 purchased (+3 classes out from your 12). This allows you to miss two or three classes within a reasonable time frame. This will be based on your chosen day of the week (Wednesdays, Saturdays or Sundays). If you think you’ll be missing more frequently, the drop-in option may be best for you! Please feel free to email with any questions.

Payments:
Payments can be made in person with cash, credit card, or check. Invoices can also be sent via email (and online payments can be made using Square).

Thanks!

Taught by Julius Rivera (as seen at the Trenton Ave Arts Fest, Haggert Playground in the summer, and other neighborhood festivities and locales), this class is a physical, fun-filled, introductory drum class. Please contact us if you’d like to join! It is a great prequel to private drum lessons.

Please contact us with interest!

Coco’s Maternity Leave!

Sometime in May, I will be taking a few months off over the summer to take care of my new baby! During that time, classes will continue, lead by Keely Sibilia. Keely will be teaching the Sunday classes this month, and will be at classes on Wednesdays to get to know the little ones.

Beginner Guitar Books, A Look Inside

We wanted to show prospective students what their first year of lessons might look like. Our guitar teachers have individual approaches, and books are only portion of what goes on. However, because books are a foundational tool where progress can be easily observed, we thought they provided a good way to show a range of beginner skills. We took a look at one of the most common beginner guitar books students might encounter (Mel Bay’s Modern Guitar Method 1) and made video samples at various stages. This Mel Bay book, which can be used for both teens and adults, teaches modern guitar method – a good basis for rock, blues, and jazz (classical method involves its own separate techniques).

This video features the last song in the book, “Southern Fried”(page 47). With a steady amount of practice, students might expect to complete this first book in about 6 months – so this is what you’ll be playing!

As the final piece of music, “Southern Fried” follows many songs, exercises, diagrams, and practice rituals for guitar, all of which slowly build skills to the level exhibited. The content of this beginner book includes an introduction to proper form, musical notation explanations (strokes of the pick, time signatures, the staff, and the notes themselves, etc.), basic tuning methods, beginner duets, chords in various keys, and chromatics. Stay tuned for more samples!

Spring Class! Drums Ages 4-6

Julius_Rivera_DrumsKids with an interest in drums can get a taste of what its like to take drum lessons in group classes starting April 2nd (Saturdays at 4 PM, 6 weeks). With Julius Rivera as our instructor, children ages 4-6 will explore basic drum concepts through group exercises, revolving around tub and tube drumming. Tonal tubes and tubs are a great way to convey rhythm to beginners through feel and play (think Blue Man Group). In addition to tubs and tubes, the real drum kit will be used as a basis for teaching drum terms and techniques applicable to beginner drum lessons. Julius’s style includes high-energy games that reinforce rhythm, tempo, and time. This a hands-on, collaborative approach to experimenting with drums that will tap into creativity, physicality, and imagination.
