Didi Varon
I’ve been performing since I was 7 years old. I studied Musical Theatre at American University in Washington, DC before attending the Lee Strasberg Conservatory in New York City, where I studied Method acting. I then went on to study Musical Theatre at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA, where I received my BFA in Musical Theatre with a minor in songwriting.
Currently, I work with the theatre company Family Stages, performing two-person shows for preschools, libraries, and community centers all over Pennsylvania. I also perform my one-woman “Broadway Divas” show for retirement homes and memory care units in PA, NJ, and DE.
I specialize in teaching voice and piano lessons, and I’m excited to continue helping young students and audiences discover and pursue what they love most!
When did you begin singing, and why?
I was in my first musical when I was 7 so I have been singing ever since then! I began taking formal voice lessons at the age of 12.
What other instruments do you play, and what is your experience with them?
I play piano, ukelele, and guitar. Guitar and ukelele I can teach chords. With piano, I can do that as well but teaching wise it is more beginner.
What are your personal goals as a musician?
Right now I am just focused on teaching and expanding my abilities as a teacher and always learning new techniques to teach!
Do you have a memory of a time when a musical concept or technique really clicked? Something you’ll remember forever?
Yes! When I was 19 years in old in NYC at summer Tisch musical theatre program, our voice teacher had us push against the wall to work on our belting! Now while I don’t do that all the time, it helps me remember how much strength and air I needed to belt! Another technique I remember is pretending to yawn to make space in your mouth (raising your soft palate)
What is your favorite piece of advice from one of your past (or current) teachers?
No matter how old you get, you never stop learning:)
What was your most challenging moment learning an instrument?
Practicing! But through being a teacher I have learned to make it fun!
What is your biggest musical achievement?
Graduating with a BFA in musical theatre and songwriting and working in my field!
Favorite thing about teaching?
Learning new styles and techniques that can help each specific student!
What is a piece of advice you would like to share with anyone learning music?
Trust yourself! If you feel like you want to belt in a soprano song- do it! trust your body and your gut! And give your self grace with learning new things! Never give up even if you’re frustrated because it is so rewarding to sing a “high C” even if it takes weeks!
