Five Underrated Instruments

5 Underrated Instruments for Your Child to Learn

original-5underrated_blogWhether your child wants to join their school band or orchestra, or if you want your child to take private music lessons, it can be difficult to select the right instrument. Oftentimes, students and parents alike only consider instruments that are popular, age appropriate, and/or affordable. While this criteria is reasonable, there are a number of underrated instruments for your child to learn that are also age appropriate and inexpensive.

Take a moment to consider these instruments and their benefits.

  1. Viola
A lesser known string instrument, the viola closely resembles the violin in every way it counts. In fact, many viola players are able to use their skills to play the violin later on. How? Not only are both of these instruments held and played the same way, they share three of the same strings. While the violin has one higher string, the viola has one lower string. The main difference between the two instruments is the clef they use. Violists are the only instrumentalists who regularly use the alto clef. Therefore, those who play the viola tend to have phenomenal music reading and music theory skills. Although the viola is often neglected for its popular sibling the violin, it’s one of the best instruments for your child to learn from an educational and opportunity standpoint. Less competition amongst violists means more opportunities to play.
  • Trumpet
While trumpets are well-known instruments, they are not well selected by kids looking to learn an instrument for the first time. This could be because trumpets are considered one of the most difficult instruments to play. Not only does it require good breath and finger coordination, it is a loud instrument. Furthermore, trumpets are often given the melody, making precise intonation important. If a trumpet goes out of tune, everyone will notice. This makes it a great instrument for your child to learn if they enjoy a challenge or being the center of attention.
  • Trombone
The trombone – even less popular than the trumpet – offers a number of advantages to your child. Like many of the instruments on this list, less competition means your child will have more opportunities to play the trombone. The trombone has the unique benefit of being valuable to just about every kind of music group as well. They’re heard in bands, orchestras, symphonies, jazz bands, and so on. While the trombone can be a difficult instrument to care for, it can be a good opportunity for your child to learn about the importance of maintenance and respect for valuable items.
  • Flute
Considered one of the oldest woodwind instruments, the flute is an easy, affordable, and versatile instrument for your child to learn. It is considered versatile in terms of both portability and usage. Learning the flute allows students to pick up other instruments later on as well, such as the piccolo or the saxophone. Its ease and pleasing tone make it a good instrument to develop your child’s confidence and foundational understanding of music.
  • Clarinet
The clarinet is often neglected over its more popular counterpart, the saxophone. Few people realize the similarities between these two instruments, but a soprano saxophone even looks similar to a clarinet. However, the saxophone is considered easier to play than the clarinet, meaning the clarinet offers an educational advantage to your child. Furthermore, just like the viola to the violin, students who learn the clarinet can easily learn the saxophone later on. Switching the other way around, however, is more challenging.

Every Student Is Unique

It can be difficult to choose an instrument for you or your child when you’re just starting out, though we hope you will seriously consider these underrated instruments for your child to learn. Each one offers unique benefits to the player, and by virtue of being underrated, your child will often have more opportunities to play as a result. This could include special bands or orchestras, competitions, or even scholarships. No matter what instrument your child chooses to play though, we hope they enjoy a lifelong relationship to music!

Xylophones and PianoCovering the fundamentals of piano (keyboard instruments), ukulele (fretted string instruments), and drums (percussion instruments), our music class for kids, ages 4-6 is a creative, group approach to learning music. Children have the opportunity to gain a broad understanding of music for $15/class (45 minutes each). The fundamentals they learn will pave the way for studying a variety of instruments. Core musical concepts will be explored through experimentation and social learning.

With small class sizes, there is ample room for discussion, questions, and spontaneity. Experimentation and fun are key, and curiosity is embraced. Subjects covered include how instruments work, note reading, ear training (pitch), time, and rhythm. How sounds are made (with strings and mallets inside of the piano for example) and how pitch changes are observed through play. Art is also used to reinforce concepts, illustrating notes, finger numbers, patterns, and more. Instrument making will engage children, bringing the learning process into the home through the collection of natural materials for production.

Each child will also be able to take home their own kazoo. Kazoos help strengthen connections between the voice and ear (pitch). Learning to make noise by following patterns on piano or notes on paper is a practice they can take home week after week. Encouraging children to hum while working with their favorite songs is a great way to build ear skills! If you are interested in classes, but can’t commit to our regular schedule, you can drop in to classes for $20 with notice (contact us here).

babies and toddlers play songs fishtownJust a walk from anywhere in Fishtown, Kensington or Northern Liberties, these music classes are a unique way to meet and play with others in the community. Fishtown is just off the Girard or Aramingo exit from I-95, or a quick spin through the city for Philly families. Tots gather weekly for sing-alongs, movement and other musical activities specially made for babies and kids. Children will have the chance to learn songs together and explore a variety of kid’s instruments: jingle bells, the piano, shakers, and more. Little babies usually enjoy sitting in mom’s lap as they listen, observe, and learn. Toddlers tune in each week to familiar friends, songs, and beloved routines. Three year olds lead, participate, and add both spontaneity and creativity to classes. Providing energetic vocals and guitar, our teacher plays plenty of classic and new children’s songs (with rhymes, hand games, and playful lyrics). These are the kinds of classes that will kick off your day with good cheer! Weekday music takes place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10 AM and Wednesdays at 11:30 AM. Weekend music times are indicated on our calendar (typically 2-3 Saturdays per month).

Taught by our violin, guitar and voice teachers, classes focus on propelling complete beginners forward to a place where they can begin to play songs together. Students will learn their preferred instrument among peers, and can gain performance experience with recital opportunities. At $15 each, classes are organized into age groups and arranged based on availability and instrument. Classes can occur on weekday or weekend mornings, afternoons, or evenings (contact us to find out more). Our next launch of classes will be for the summer months, set to begin in June. Classes take place throughout the summer and can be extended into the Fall based on group interest. For students with irregular schedules, drop-ins can attend classes for $20 each.

Students will need to bring their own instrument. If students do not have a violin or guitar, Philly Music Lessons offers beginner violin rentals, and we can also make suggestions as to where you can rent or purchase a decent instrument.

My husband and I have lived and taught lessons in the Fishtown neighborhood for a while now. We couldn’t be happier to have a new space where we can host more than just private lessons.  With such a music-oriented neighborhood (and city at large), we wanted to contribute to our neighborhood’s growing number of kids activities.  My background working with children and our long-time dedication to music lead us to the creation of these classes. We hope to to continue to grow our offerings and to enrich our neighborhood with more music-oriented gatherings.

Very accessible from Northern Liberties, Port Richmond, and other neighborhoods in Philly, we welcome folks throughout the city : Old City, Society Hill, Fishtown, Northern Liberties, Fairmount, Rittenhouse, West Philly, and surrounding areas. Philly Music Lessons is located at 2111 E Susquehanna Ave. Classes will be a year round occurrence, so keep an eye out for the Fall schedule!

Group Music Lessons for Kids

piano lessons for kids

private music lessons or group classes

Kids Group Music Lessons in Philadelphia – Children are born interested in music.  At Philly Music Lessons, we often receive inquiries as to whether or not its possible to start very young kids with music lessons (I mean your toddler who is unusually obsessed with guitar, or your 4 year old who wants nothing more than to perform like a rockstar).  Our answer to this is of course, YES, it is possible!  The trick is finding a method and teacher that jives with your child’s personality and goals.  So, how best to approach finding the right music lessons?

Each child is a different type of learner.  For instance, one type of kid might really enjoy note reading and the patterns inherent in music.  They will be able to easily sit though lessons and practice, while truly enjoying learning note names and instrument fingering. Another kid might be drawn to the lyrical and expressive qualities of music.  Their ear will guide them in understanding songs.  Experimenting during lessons may be key. If your child is the animated performer, she or he might be better off focusing on favorite and familiar songs rather than getting bogged down immediately by technical music instruction.  Whatever type of child you think you have, it is important to pay attention to their interests and style.  So explain to your prospective teachers what your child likes, and they can develop music lessons around what makes your child tick.

We keep an eclectic stock of gifted teachers on staff, coming from all musical backgrounds and walks of life.  Some have children themselves and understand the quirks that go along with these little personalities! Some are simply talented at creatively teaching kids music.  Our teachers can bring fun to just about any learning material during private lessons, and make it a point to incorporate student interests into the learning process.  Whether it be piano lessons, drum lessons, or guitar lessons, all of our teachers understand how to adapt their methods and instruments for little minds and hands.

While plenty of kids show interest in taking private lessons, others that are clearly drawn to music may not be ready for the one-on-one.  That is why we have decided to offer small group classes for kids!  Group lessons are a great way to introduce music in a casual, friendly, social, and spontaneous, environment.  While our group classes are truly relevant to all ages (adults welcome as well – duos, trios, quartets, rock and jazz bands) we’ve created this particular set of classes with 4-6 year olds (preschoolers – kindergarteners ) in mind.   After a group of between 3 and 5 children is established (please contact us if you are interested in setting up a group lesson) lessons can be scheduled on a regularly occurring, weekly basis. Throughout the weeks, our teachers will use creative methods to engage the group.  By introducing song, dance, and movement, these classes become a lively and active environment for exploration.  Broadly touching on many fundamental musical concepts and dabbling with various instruments, group lessons can also be more directed to the set interests of the group (i.e. vocals, guitar, or piano).  These group jams are a great stepping stone to more advanced lessons, which can be continued in group form or as individual lessons throughout the years.

Babies and Musical Instruments

Introducing newborns, babies, and toddlers to music!

Free Mommy and Baby Music Classes Begin – Today, we successfully held our first two baby classes at our Fishtown studio!  Turnout was great, making for two highly entertaining morning sessions.  Newborns nursed, listened, and played, while busy toddlers danced around to tunes while tapping on instruments.   A lovely 5 year girl old stopped by with her mom and baby sister, carting her awesome purple guitar!  She and the others (those of walking age, at least) skipped around during circle games and made the class a real treat to teach.  I couldn’t resist celebrating the morning with an ice cream cone from Little Baby’s down the street.

This music class was the first of many that we will hold throughout the summer.  While we welcome Philly Music Lesson’s new presence in the community (2111 E Susquehanna Ave), all classes in June are free.  Come July, we will establish regular days and times (and specify age groups) so that parents, caregivers, and youngsters can make a weekly habit of music!  Continue to look out for free music classes later in the summer and on select weekends.  In the meantime, join us again for some more FREE FUN next Wednesday, the 11th, Saturday the 14th, and Wednesday the 18th.  Just drop in! Class times are at 9am and 10 am and are open to all babies and kids ages 0-5 years.  Hope to see you soon!

Coming to Fishtown in June – Baby Music Classes

Kids Music Lessons

Baby music classes in Fishtown at Philly Music Lessons

Announcing Baby Music Classes for Fishtown – Having just settled into our new space off of Frankford Ave (just north of Northern Liberties), we are proud to announce our new baby-mommy music class!  We love our Fishtown neighborhood, and we love music.  We thought it only fitting to offer a class for those too young for private lessons (and not yet old enough for a Johnny Brenda’s show!).   Welcoming families and their little ones (babies 0-2 and kids 2-4 years), Philly Music Babies is a place where neighbors and friends can commune and play some music together.  Beginning in June, our classes will be held on a regular basis.  Lead by one of our teachers, Coco Primavera, who specializes in singing tunes for babies and toddlers, these group explorations will engage youngsters through song and movement.   Our 45 minute sessions will appropriately advance according to age throughout the weeks, months, and even years. Children will become familiar with friends and teachers in their community, while learning song, dance, and the fundamentals of music.  With bubbles, scarves, instruments and guitar-lead kids’ songs, we look forward to seeing you throughout the summer and next year!  Whether you plan to drop in occasionally, or make it part of your weekly routine, our doors will soon be open.
